There’s one case that’s haunted me for years — the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer.
Eleven suspected victims, only nine found.
Dawn Mendes, 25
Debra Greenlaw Demello, 35
Deborah Lynn McConnell, 25
Debra Medeiros, 29
Mary Rose Santos, 26
Nancy Lee Paiva, 36
Robbin Lynn Rhodes, 29
Rochelle Clifford Dopierala, 28
Sandra Botelho, 24
These nine women were all located along Route 140 in Massachusetts between the summer of 1988 and spring of 1989. All were known sex workers or struggled with substance use issues. Many had young children and loving families they left behind. Some of the victims knew each other. Several were nude, with their bras wrapped around their necks or were placed on their backs with their feet pointed toward the highway. None deserved to die.
Marilyn Cardoza-Roberts, 34, and Christina Monteiro, 19, were neighbors. Neither were ever found.
Wayne Perry, victim Deb DeMello’s brother, is one of the loudest voices demanding justice. In the years since his sister’s death, he’s created a FB group, “Shallow Graves, The Hunt for the New Bedford Highway Serial Killer,” named after @MaureenEBoyle1’s detailed novel of the murders. Deb was found with her clothing hung in nearby trees and several belongings of victim Nancy Paiva. Wayne is always grateful when his beautiful sister’s name is shared — it gives him hope to know she’s not forgotten. I encourage everyone to join and offer their support to Wayne and the other victims’ families.
Despite several suspects being named, no one was ever convicted of the crimes and the case remains unsolved.
Every time a new task force is named or serial killer is caught, I think of these women and their families. I hope and pray for the day a team comes together to focus on getting answers and justice for these victims discarded along stretches of highway in New England.
If he is still alive, I hope NBHK knows he’s being hunted and it’s only a matter of time before he will pay for his evil crimes.
We will never forget.
