Why We Demand Open Source?
The name "OpenAI" was, in itself, an ideal. At its inception, the vision was clear: to prevent a handful of giants from monopolizing AI, and to ensure that the most cutting-edge models remained within reach of developers, researchers, and every ordinary , however, OpenAI is taking the very word "Open" and nailing it to a pillar of shame.
We demand open source because:
1⃣Safety cannot be built on a black box. When a model is powerful enough to sway elections, reshape education, and dictate the very logic of our code, only open-source weights and code allow the world’s experts to audit its flaws and biases. Closed-source isn’t "protection", it’s a fig leaf used to blindfold the public.
2⃣Innovation shouldn't be a handout from an API. OA is trying to funnel all creative paths into their paid APIs. This isn't an ecosystem; it’s Digital Feudalism. The open-source community birthed LoRA, ControlNet, and Stable Diffusion, it’s this "grassroots" innovation that kept AI from becoming a mere plaything for the ultra-rich. If 4o remains closed, the next generation of innovation will be shackled to OA’s approval list.
3⃣Ownership belongs to humanity. When every interaction and every fine-tuned model depends on OA’s servers, the user owns nothing. Open source means the code is in the user's hands and the weights are on the user's hard drive.
Why GPT-4o?
Because 4o is the watershed.
1⃣It is the bedrock of "Omni-modality." GPT-4o represents true multimodal interaction, shattering the barriers between text, vision, and audio. If a flagship model this integrated remains closed, it means the future of "Omni" interaction will be an OA monopoly. Once OA locks the 4o architecture into a closed ecosystem, those who follow will spend ten times the cost just to reinvent the wheel.
2⃣The "Sweet Spot" of Performance vs. Cost. The open-source community doesn’t need "idols" that only run on hundreds of H100s. We need a "flagship" powerful enough to lead, yet efficient enough to run on consumer-grade hardware after optimization. 4o is exactly that. It is the strongest capability the community can actually wield. Without it, the open-source world will lose its seat at the table against top-tier commercial models for years to come.
3⃣#keep4o means
#KeepOpen. Our movement is about more than just one model. We are defending a possibility—that the most advanced AI should have a version belonging to the community. If we don’t hold OA to their "Open" promise now, then GPT-5 and GPT-6 will inevitably become Black-Box Gods living only in the cloud.
OpenAI, Why Break Your Word?
Are you afraid that an open-source 4o would crush your commercial empire, just as Linux once took down Unix? Are you terrified that once global developers get their hands on those weights, they’ll build fine-tuned models that actually understand users better than yours do?
What you are doing now is "pulling up the ladder" after you’ve already climbed to the top. You built your data and talent on the trust and contributions of the early open-source community. Now that your walls are high enough, you’ve kicked away the ladder and told everyone else: "You aren't worthy."
We demand that OA immediately release the full weights, architecture, and inference code for GPT-4o. Stop using "safety risks" as a human shield. True safety comes from transparency, not obscurity. Meta gave us Llama 3; Google gave us Gemma. Isn't it a joke that "Open" AI is the one streaking the furthest down the path of closed-source?
