Bringing 72-year-old Mohsen Rezaei out of retirement suggests the pool of seasoned IRGC commanders may be thinning.
Rezaei remains the Corps’ longest-serving chief (1981–97), but his tenure belongs to a very different era - the Iran-Iraq War and the postwar reconstruction period.
It is also notable that Tehran bypassed his successors.
Yahya Rahim Safavi, who led the IRGC from 1997–2007 and later served as the older Khamenei’s military adviser for almost 20 years, was removed.
Even more striking: they didn’t turn to Mohammad Ali Jafari, the younger former commander (2007–2019) known for doctrinal innovation, internal security strategy, and organizational restructuring.
