It's also important to focus on the quality of interaction rather than the quantity when bringing people together from different backgrounds. And this interaction does not necessarily happen 'automatically' in areas which are culturally diverse, help is still needed #SharedGround

Although tempting to 'hope things will work themselves out' the best time to work on community tensions and hold difficult conversations is when they are not 'hot' - a preventative approach, rather than a reactive one is more effective #SharedGround

Another factor in increasing community tensions can be the (mis)perception that every other group is being heard by decision makers and those in power other than the one that an individual identifies with #SharedGround

Polarising voices can also be quicker to react and respond to community tensions than those looking to reduce them and build bridges, particularly online. It's also important to talk to people of all ages, ethnicities and gender so that engagement is not skewed. #SharedGround

Our panel members now discussing 'flash points' in community relations - how they are reacted to can be revealing. These reactions also take place within a wider context of national and international events. #SharedGround
