This is the whole “hymn” - 11 This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. 12 If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. 13 If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself. From the Believer’s Bible Commentary- “Verses 11–13 are thought by some to be from an early Christian hymn. Whether that is so or not, they certainly present some inflexible principles concerning man’s relationship to the Lord Jesus Christ. Hiebert writes: “The central truth of these pithy statements is that faith in Christ identifies the believer with Him in everything while unbelief just as surely separates men from Him.”15 This is the fourth faithful saying in Paul’s Letters to Timothy. The first principle is that if we died with Christ, we shall also live with Him. This is true of every believer. In a spiritual sense, we died with Him the moment we trusted Him as our Savior. We were buried with Him, and we rose again with Him from among the dead. Christ died as our Representative and Substitute. We should have died for our sins, but Christ died in our place. God reckons us to have died with Him, and this means that we shall also live with Him in heaven. Perhaps this verse also has an application to those who die as Christian martyrs. Those who thus follow Him in death will likewise follow Him in resurrection.” I look at it this way- we are pretty much sin personified and when we “die in Christ” sin dies… like how it did when Jesus took all the sin and suffered the punishment. We died, our sin died, without suffering the punishment. Jesus did that. And so we don’t have to. Sure, we will have to deal with consequences on earth that come with past sins sometimes but the punishment was paid. So in our death, our SIN personhood, we get to live as new creations– Jesus modeled that truth with His resurrection- We have that to look forward to. We will live as new creations here but we will Resurrect in glorified and sinless bodies one day. And we will live with Him in heaven when that happens. And that is what makes it all worthwhile.

From the Believer’s Bible Commentary- “Here we should also notice the difference between law and grace. God does not say, “If you live a life of freedom from sin, then I will give you a position of death with Christ.” That would be law. Our position would depend on our own efforts, and needless to say, no one would ever attain that position. Instead of that, God says: “I freely give to all who believe on the Lord Jesus a position of favor in My sight. Now go out and live a life that is consistent with such a high calling.” That is grace!... Fornication is generally used to describe unlawful sexual intercourse or immorality, especially between single people (Matt. 15:19; Mark 7:21). Sometimes it is broader and is translated as sexual immorality. Uncleanness refers to impurity of thought, word, or action. It speaks of moral filth rather than physical dirtiness here. Passion denotes strong and unbridled lust. Evil desire speaks of intense and often violent craving. Covetousness in general means greediness or the desire to have more, but here it may refer especially to an unholy desire to satisfy sexual appetite which is idolatry.” This comes right after yesterday’s verse and it speaks again to the carnality of human life. We trade this in for Christ when we believe. We learn to walk in step with Him so as to avoid earnestly the pitfalls that these members create- fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness which is idolatry. Look around the world right now. Just a glance at social media will show evidence of ALL of these. And we live in an age where it is not only easy to give in to these things but we live in a society that encourages it! It can feel so overwhelming for someone who desperately wants to beat these urges into oblivion and I believe that the only way to do that IS to live in Christ. With Christ we have a strong and sturdy moral foundation. We have a rule book. We have support. We have consequences for backsliding but also grace when we repent. And like I have said before- after we do it enough- it gets easier because we HATE these things in the world and we hate them even more in ourselves and in our lives. I spend a significant amount of time asking for God to keep me from temptations that I know will lead me astray from Him. I beg His forgiveness when I fall. I get my “feet washed” as Jesus explained we all need from time to time in the Gospel of John. And then I pick myself up, leaning on the Lord, and start again. I have my own sins. My own temptations. Yours may be different. I don’t judge you for them. I pray for you to overcome them like I pray for myself to overcome my own. I take comfort in knowing that someday, we won’t have to worry about these things anymore. I long for that day more than you can imagine. For now, I lean heavily into the Lord and ask for help with every breath because while I still have breath in my lings, t is the best thing I can do..

Because of our identification with Christ in His death, God wants us to consider ourselves as having died with Him. Our own hearts are always ready to dispute this fact, because we feel so very much alive to sin and temptation. But the wonderful thing is that as we by faith reckon ourselves to have died with Christ, it becomes a moral reality in our lives. If we live as those who have died, then our lives will become increasingly conformed to the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. Of course, we will never reach perfection in this life, but it is a process that should be going on in every believer. Not only have we died, but also our life is hidden with Christ in God. The things that concern and interest the worldly man are found on this planet on which we live. However, the things that are of greatest concern to the believer are all bound up in the Person of the Lord Jesus Christ. His destiny and ours are inseparable. Paul’s thought is that since our life is hidden with Christ in God, we should not be occupying ourselves with the petty things of this world, and especially the religious world about us. But there is another thought connected with the expression your life is hidden with Christ in God. The world does not see our spiritual life. Men do not understand us. They think it is strange that we do not live like they do. They do not comprehend our thoughts, our motives, or our ways. Just as it is said of the Holy Spirit that the world “neither sees Him, nor knows Him,” so it is with our spiritual life; it is hidden with Christ in God. First John 3:1 tells us: “Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” The real separation from the world lies in the fact that the world does not understand, but rather misunderstands the believer.------ The Believer’s Bible Commentary.

Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart. First comes trust. Then we are so inclined to do good. That precious fruit that comes from surrendering to God’s will for our lives. Then, no matter the circumstances, we find our joy and our DELIGHT in Him. This delight, the desire to do good, to continue to trust in His promises BECOMES the desires of our forever changed heart. There is also the promise of eternity with God. That when we surrender to Him we never die but instead live forever with Him. What an amazing reason to surrender to the Lord.
