Meeting Bishop Holmberg of @svenskakyrkan, ErikLysen of @Act_Svk and staff from Uniting Church in Sweden was a great pleasure. UNRWA Director for the #WestBank @GRFriedrich, Director for Gaza #SamRose and I discussed the dramatic escalation in the occupied Palestinian territory. We provided details on how @UNRWA continues its human development work and emergency response in the face of countless political and operational challenges. We reiterated that millions depends on UNRWA support for their survival and development. We expressed regret at Sweden’s change of position which affects many, including in #Gaza, where famine grows, and thanked @Act_Svk and the churches’ representatives for their unequivocal and strong support.

Yesterday, @GRFriedrich and #SamRose and I had an depth discussion with the leader of the left party @dadgostarnooshi of Sweden 🇸🇪 as well as party members @hsvenneling, Lotta Johnsson Fornarve and @A_Lennkvist on @UNRWA’s operations including the situation in #Gaza and the #WestBank. We discussed the impact of the anti-UNRWA Knesset legislation and with it, the mis/disinformation campaign against our Agency. We stressed that UNRWA stays and delivers. We reiterated that the partnership with Sweden had been an essential part of the construct of UNRWA and the support to #PalestineRefugees over decades. We expressed regret at the decision to stop funding UNRWA, made on the basis of false arguments while so many lives depend on services and aid UNRWA provides to millions in the Middle East. We thanked @vansterpartiet for including funding to UNRWA in their shadow budget.

In Sweden 🇸🇪, a high-level on delegation, composed of the directors for Gaza #SamRose, for the Westbank @GRFriedrich and myself visited the parliament. With thanks to the Chair @sdkarlsson and Vice-chair @johanssonmorgan for the invitation, we were honored to brief the members of the 🇸🇪 Foreign Affairs Committee, which gave us the opportunity to reiterate that @UNRWA remains indispensable for #PalestineRefugees in #Syria, #Jordan, #Lebanon, #Gaza and the #WestBank. Our core services of education, health, social protection and our emergency operations are a lifeline for millions in the Middle East in particular those suffering from the war in Gaza and the deteriorating situation in the West Bank. We also stressed that UNRWA remains committed to humanitarian principles. We hope that clarifications we provided can help bring back Sweden as the major and strategic partner to UNRWA it was once. Helping Gaza effectively in a famine situation has to go through strengthening UNRWA.
