The proposal is being advanced by far-right minister Itamar Ben-Gvir with direct backing from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and comes as hostages inside Israeli prisons face what rights groups describe as the deadliest period in decades, with more than 100 killed since October 2023 through torture, medical neglect, and abuse, including dozens whose identities remain withheld.
Institutions say this law formalizes what has already been taking place: systematic killing inside captivity, now escalating into open execution under legal cover, directly threatening the lives of detained Palestinians whose cases have drawn international concern. They warn the timing is deliberate, pushed forward while global attention is focused elsewhere, and describe it as a decisive step that could rapidly expand killings inside prisons. Appeals have been sent to the United Nations, diplomats, and human rights bodies, urging immediate intervention before the vote, including sanctions, legal action under universal jurisdiction, and full international isolation of Israeli institutions involved. The message is clear: once passed, hostages like Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and many others could face execution under law, making this a final window to act.
