Eskom’s largest Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), located at the Hex site in Worcester, Western Cape, stands as a beacon of innovation and a testament to the transformative power of intellectual property in addressing critical energy rgy Storage plays an important role in ensuring that power supply is available when needed, as well as improving power quality, especially with the addition of variable renewable energy to the grid.
Eskom's Hex BESS has a storage capacity of 100 MWh, which can power a town the size of Mossel Bay or Howick for approximately five hours. 💡
This initiative is part of Eskom’s broader BESS program, which includes the installation of approximately 833 MWh of additional storage capacity across eight Eskom Distribution substation sites in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape, Western Cape, and Northern Cape, complemented by about 2 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity.
The collaborative efforts between Eskom, Hyosung Heavy Industries, and various funders highlight the importance of partnerships in driving innovation. 🤝
