#sapsMP [SAPS BRINGS SERVICES TO THE PEOPLE AND PARTICIPATES IN PUBLIC HEARING]
#SAPS in Mpumalanga is participating in the 'Taking Legislature to the People (TLP)' programme hosted by the Provincial Legislature at Sun City Sportsground in Mayflower, Chief Albert Luthuli Local o 26 March 2026.
The TLP is a public participation initiative aimed at bringing the Legislature closer to communities, particularly in rural and under-served areas. It provides residents with a platform to raise service delivery concerns directly to Members of the Executive and government departments, strengthening oversight, accountability and participatory democracy.
Police officers, led by the Acting District Commissioner for the Gert Sibande District, Brigadier ZW Mavuso, and the Provincial Head of Inspectorate, Brigadier P Le Grange, formed part of the public hearing conducted on 24 March 2026, where several safety concerns were raised.
Community members raised concerns relating to illegal mining, police infrastructure, stock theft and business-related extortion, among others.
llegal Mining
The community was assured that ongoing disruptive operations, including Vala Umgodi, recent arrests and the seizure of equipment, including “phendukas”, as well as the assignment of dedicated district-level investigators, would deal a heavy blow against illegal mining.
Building and Upgrading of Police Stations
Residents welcomed confirmation that a fully fledged police station at nearby Dundonald is at the tender stage, the Mayflower Police Station is earmarked for an upgrade, plans for a satellite station next to the Municipal Offices are underway, and that 10 new vehicles have been deployed to various police stations within the municipality.
Stock Theft
Stock owners responded positively to news of a feasibility study aimed at decentralising the Stock Theft Unit to improve response times. They were also encouraged to join other stock owners who regularly participate in awareness campaigns and weekly integrated operations conducted with other stakeholders, including the Community Policing Forum.
Business-Related Extortion
The community was informed of arrests made in Carolina and the deployment of two dedicated investigators assigned to prioritise extortion-related cases in the district.
SAPS Service Complaints representatives were also on site to assist community members with lodging and escalating service-related concerns for immediate follow-up.
