@Protodedester Basically, if Oshii hadn’t been so openly hostile toward Noa — first provoking Yuuki’s backlash, and then the rest of Headgear’s too — I don’t think the possibility of Noa and Asuma having a romantic relationship would have become something so avoided.

@moricalliope The two movies directed by Oshii are absolutely incredible. Combining Oshii's style and themes to Patlabor was a winning combo. The 'bogey' scene embodies all Oshii's masterclass: he builds tension... over nothing. Ah, I must rewatch them too someday.

@Protodedester In fact, Oshii has never really hidden his dislike of Noa. That particular line of Noa’s in Patlabor 2 is, in his case, basically an expression of that dislike. About that line, in the first image he says this:

@Protodedester I completely get what you mean. I think Yuuki probably realized pretty early on just how fundamentally, hopelessly old-fashioned Oshii’s attitude really was. You know, Noa’s earrings are kind of a subtle marker of her “changing from a girl into a woman.” ↓

@Protodedester And as Oshii’s relationship with the other Headgear members got more and more strained, the others were probably more willing to back Yuuki Masami and distance themselves from Oshii’s Asuma/Noa marriage route.

@Protodedester has several kids, and has lost her figure. And even by the time of TNG, Oshii still hadn’t let go of that mean-spirited impulse. At one point he wanted Noa and Asuma to already have two kids, and by 首都决戦 he apparently wanted them to call Noa in to pilot the Ingram,

@Protodedester he keeps trying to push Noa into the most deflating possible “housewife” image from a Noa fan’s point of view. Her marrying Asuma is basically just a byproduct of that fixation. I don’t know if you’ve heard about this, but around 2000 Oshii also

@Protodedester , and Noa is more like the ideal future. Then there’s Oshii, who seems to see Noa as the fantasy of an otaku-type man like Yuuki Masami, and he has always looked really eager to tear that fantasy down. You can see that in how, in Oshii’s works,
