Stocks on the NGX fall into different sectors. The main ones are: 1. Banking: GTCO, Zenith, Access, UBA, Stanbic, Fidelity. The most actively traded sector. 2. Consumer Goods: Nestle, Nigerian Breweries, BUA Foods, Dangote Sugar, Nascon. 3. Industrial: Dangote Cement, BUA Cement, Lafarge Africa. Capital intensive but stable. 4. Oil and Gas: Seplat, Oando, Aradel, TotalEnergies. Linked to oil prices and FX. 5. Insurance: AXA Mansard, Leadway, NEM Insurance. Smaller but growing sector. 6. Telecoms: MTN Nigeria, Airtel Africa. High revenue, strong customer bases. Diversification means spreading your investments across multiple sectors. If banking stocks crash, your telecoms and cement stocks might hold up. Never put all your money in one sector.

To buy shares on the NGX, you need three things: 1. A stockbroker: this is a licensed firm registered with the SEC that executes your buy and sell orders. Think of them as your agent in the market. You cannot walk into the NGX yourself. 2. A CSCS account: the Central Securities Clearing System holds all shares electronically in Nigeria. Your CSCS number is like your BVN but for the stock market. Every share you buy is recorded here. 3. A bank account: your broker needs somewhere to send your dividends and proceeds when you sell. Link a bank account to your brokerage and CSCS. Your stockbroker will help you open the CSCS account. The entire setup process takes a few days to about a week depending on the broker.
