@I understandthe need for breed standards, but I agree with you completely about focusing on what actually matters in today's world.
A ewe who takes on the first try, carries well, throws twins and raises them both, has plenty of milk with a good fat content, has a blocky, properly muscular build with good meat quality, has sound feet, and has a high quality fleece with good crimp and minimal variation in microns between the back and sides? And she is a natural blue-gray and her lambs range from black to silver? Yes, please!
A ewe who has perfectly shaped ears? Why should I care?
The first wool show I went to at a county fair (Monterey, many decades ago) was a mind-blowing experience. I didn't want to go because I couldn't afford to buy more wool yet, but my friends dragged me along, saying the judge was amazing. And he was. After that, I went to every fair I could get to if he was judging because the lessons he taught were golden.
We sat on a small set of bleachers and he had a table down front, covered in rolled and tied fleeces. He narrated as he worked. He grabbed a fleece, tossed the ball of it up in the air a few times, said, "Good" and untied it, talking about the proper way to roll and tie a fleece.
He spread it out, cut side up, checked for second cuts, spoke about the color (this was a handspinners' show so most of these were naturally colored fleeces), the crimp, the lock formation, the staple length.
Then he flipped it over and spoke about straw and dirt and tags, whether the skirting had been done well enough, felted tips, and micron variation (back then it was Bradford counts) from the finer neck wool to the coarser britches.
Then he'd check the label and say, "This is supposed to be a Romney. It is a Romney cross." And then he'd tell us what aspects showed variation from the breed standard and what other breed(s) he was seeing. Then he deftly re-rolled the fleece and set it to the side.
He picked up the next bundle, tossed it a few times, grunted, and said, "Well!" and untied it to reveal that the person had crammed all the skirting in the center, including a lot of tags, which took the weight up but meant you were buying a lot of waste. He spoke about shady practices in the industry, told some stories that had us laughing, and then went on to the next fleece.
One of the white fleeces had yolk stain and got docked points for that.
He'd get a sweet look on his grizzled face when he opened up a particularly nice fleece. He'd pet it for a moment, then launch into his detailed analysis. At the end, he looked at the dozen or so rolled fleeces and very quickly reorganized them from champion down to the one that had the dreck in the center. What a lesson!
