@Dear @talemwamo@sesl
The E@ast African Community (EAC) aims for deeper integration culminating in a Political Federation. Here's a quick timeline and key achievements:
1967–1977: Original EAC formed by Kenya, Uganda & Tanzania but collapsed due to political & economic differences.
1999/2000: Revived via Treaty signed Nov 1999, effective July 2000 (initial 3 members).
2005: Customs Union launched – duty-free trade internally + Common External Tariff.
2007: Burundi & Rwanda join (later: South Sudan 2016, DRC 2022, Somalia 2024).
2010: Common Market Protocol effective – free movement of goods, services, labour & capital.
2013: East African Monetary Union (EAMU) Protocol signed; aims for single currency (progress via convergence criteria & East African Monetary Institute).
2017: Heads of State adopt Political Confederation as transitional step toward full Federation.
Achievements:
Boosted intra-EAC trade & investment.
Harmonized customs, reduced some non-tariff barriers.
Infrastructure & energy projects advanced.
Population ~300+ million, growing single market potential.
Full political federation (with constitution drafting/consultations ongoing) remains the ultimate goal but faces challenges like sovereignty concerns, infrastructure gaps & uneven implementation. Progress is steady but gradual – a strong foundation for East African unity!
