i think passion and care are often confused. colloquially, both imply an automatic emotional involvement. both care and passion can follow action. investing hard, deliberate work into something creates care (emotional involvement) for that thing. this the principle in cal newport's books. the exception is if we work with ironic detachment (eg jim from the office). and so, we can choose and control what we are emotionally invested in by what we spend our time on. stimulants like coffee, adderall, etc get us to invest harder into whatever is in front of us. this is one way to accelerate the caring process. screens are also a stimulant. most ux designers choose layouts and colors to get you to care about things you wouldn't otherwise care about. also, blue light itself is stimulating. so, habitual stimulant use and habitual screen use can make you deeply care (emotionally involved) in things you wouldn't naturally care about, or freely choose to care about via deliberation. this causes many problems. sunlight is a natural stimulant. the hindu tradition says that the sun impels beings to action. physical sunlight is described rajasic (passionate), and astrologers call the krura, or cruel.
