@JackRhysider TOTP has the benefit that the app nor the server need any communication. If the clocks are in harmony, it works even if your mobile doesn’t have service. But, it does mean sometimes the code is expiring soon.

@CryErniCryErni @JackRhysider TOTP and Message-push apps are immune to SIM-swapping, which is why they are preferred to SMS.

@CryErniCryErni @JackRhysider SIM swapping and SS7 attacks only breaks SMS and call based 2FA. TOTP, Duo, Okta, even MS Authenticator are immune to that. TOTP can work completely offline, the rest have offline components but can function over WiFi as well...

@TOTP requires time-sync with the server, so "fresh minute on open" would break the protocol. The 30-second window IS the security feature. But push-based 2FA (Duo, MS Authenticator prompts) already solved this - you just tap approve whenever. The UX problem is that we're still using 1990s OTP design when better options exist.
