This latest missile strike is a direct result of the shifting balance of power inside Iran — particularly the growing dominance of the IRGC and the aftermath of Khamenei’s removal. Despite his deep ideological hostility toward the West, Khamenei exercised a high degree of caution in deploying Iran’s capabilities. That restraint is no longer guaranteed. The emerging Iran is likely to behave less like the cautious, calculating actor we’ve known — and more like a risk-tolerant, North Korea–style system. There is also a fundamental misconception that missile capabilities of this scale can somehow be contained or rolled back. Once a state demonstrates the ability to project power at these ranges, that capability is here to stay. This only reinforces a critical strategic point: prioritization matters. The focus must be on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons capability — because that is the only truly existential dimension of the threat. #ira
